SASW Mentoring Service

SASW Membership Committee launched the mentoring service on 16 November 2019. The programme was designed to support the transition from academic to clinical setting for beginning social workers under the guidance of experienced social workers. In the pilot run, 12 mentees were matched with six mentors who were past Outstanding Social Worker Award (OSWA) or Promising Social Worker Award (PSWA) recipients. The mentees are beginning social workers who have joined the sector for less than three years and SASW members. The duration of the programme was 12 months where mentors and mentees met up at least four times. The final evaluation conducted at the end of the pilot run were largely positive

The Mentoring Service is opened to all SASW members practising social work for less than three years and where members can request for a mentor to guide them through their initial journey as a social worker.

Interested members who meet the basic criteria may apply for the service voluntarily where he/she will be matched with a mentor. The mentor and mentee are to:

  • Meet up at least four times within the 12-month period

  • Decide on the topics to be discussed during each session and

  • Abide by the SASW Code of Professional Ethics throughout the period of mentoring.

SASW will provide administrative support when necessary.

Social Work Mentorship Programme

The Social Work Mentorship Programme for mid-careerist Social Workers is a joint initiative between the Social Service SkillsFuture Tripartite Taskforce (STT)1 and the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW), and is supported by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). The STT comprises of Academics, Social Service Agencies’ Leaders, Leaders of Professional Associations and Policymakers. The STT seeks to strengthen professional development in the Social Service sector.

The Social Work Mentorship Programme (SWMP) will match new mid-careerist social workers with experienced social worker mentors to receive support on issues beyond clinical practice, such as guidance in personal and career development. The mentorship period would last for 12 months and Mentor and Mentee will decide on frequency and meeting arrangements.

The Social Work Mentorship Programme (SWMP) for mid-careerists is a pilot and two runs will be offered, with the application for the first intake beginning in February 2021. More information on the second intake will be made available at a later date. More information about the SWMP can be found in the EDM below.

Interested mid-careerist social workers may click here or scan the QR code in the EDM above to apply. As slots are limited, applicants may be contacted to assess suitability for the programme.

Social Workers who are not mid-careerists may consider applying to an equivalent programme run by SASW for its members.
