Programme Details
Delivery an effective groupwork is more than just facilitation craft. This course is designed to build practical groupwork competencies and self-awareness that will give the participants the confidence to deliver an effective groupwork and beyond.
Groupwork is an intentional and dynamic intervention that cannot be fully understood and executed through just textbook. In the three days course, participants will be engaged in an experiential learning by journeying through the key groupwork stages and group process. In this process, they will explore groupwork competencies in managing challenging behaviours, enhancing group dynamic, and addressing ethical concerns towards group growth.
Besides being able to immerse in a group setting, the participants will also gain a better understanding of self and its influence to be effective group facilitator.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Have a clear definition of what constitutes a groupwork
- Appreciate rationale for using group work as a form of intervention
- Understand theories informing group work
- Identify ethical consideration in groupwork
- Demonstrate knowledge in identifying stages of groupwork
- Observe and identify group process
- Utilize the Person of Group Facilitator in group delivery
- Apply facilitation skills towards effective group work delivery
- Apply appropriate strategies to resolve conflict, enhance group dynamic and delivery towards group growth

Targeting social workers and social service practitioners who are new to groupwork intervention and inspiring to equip themselves with groupwork competencies and reflexivity in delivering groupwork effectively.
Ben Ang holds a Master of Social Science in Professional Counselling, Bachelor of Social Work, Post Graduate Diploma in Working with Couples and Families, and Diploma in Clinical Supervision.
He has been in a Family Service Centre since 2008 working with different group of people facing a range of issues. He is particularly interested in working with the vulnerable and higher risk group of families. To better manage the arising needs of complex cases, Ben adopts a holistic approach to incorporate groupwork as part of his intervention approach with casework and counselling support. He had worked with groups for youths with mental health, betrayed spouse, parenting group, and families entangled with drug related concerns. Currently, he is running a group for men who cause hurt. This groupwork “Brotherhood” was awarded Family Violence Dialogue Group Appreciation Award in 2020.
Presently, Ben is the Principal Social Worker of THK Family Service Centre @ Bedok North, overseeing groupwork synergy, development and implementation for THK Family Service Division. He runs groupwork training and supervision for the groupworks in THK. Ben is passionate in group intervention, and hopes to inspire and groom more groupwork leaders.

VCF Grant Application
The VCF grant is open to participants who meet the following criteria and conditions:
1. Must be employed and sponsored for the course by a Social Service Agency (SSA) affiliated to the National Council of Social Service (NCSS); and
2. Must attain at least 75% attendance failing which he/she or his/her employer will have to pay the FULL course fee.
The SSA must apply for the grant online separately at http://www.ncss.org.sg/vwocorner/index.asp
The VCF Grant application should be made only after the SSA has received notice of course confirmation from SASWFRTC, otherwise it will be deemed as invalid and the SSA will have to cancel the application online. The SSA should send the approval email immediately to SASW-FRTC upon approval of the VCF Grant after which an auto-generated invoice would be emailed to the SSA administrator.
Payment Method
If you are sponsored by your employer, please seek approval from your Supervisor to attend the course before you register. In the event of any discrepancies, you will be liable for the course fee.
All fees must be paid after course confirmation and before commencement. Payments may be made by cheque or bank transfer. Cheques should be made payable to “SASW–Family Resource& Training Ctr”. Kindly indicate the invoice number behind the cheque.

Registration
The registrant will receive an acknowledgement receipt via email. Please allow up to 5 working days for processing of registration. Upon confirmation of participation, the HR/department administrator (i.e. contact person)/registrant will receive a course confirmation notice and invoice from SASW-FRTC via email.
As registrations are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, you are advised to register early.
