Existential Analysis Workshop:
Developing Clients’ Authenticity

Existential Analysis can be defined as a phenomenological and person-oriented psychotherapy, with the aim of leading the person to (mentally and emotionally) free experiences, to facilitate authentic decisions and to bring about a truly responsible way of dealing with life and the world.

The psychotherapeutic process takes place via phenomenological analysis of the emotions as the centre of experiences. Biographical work and empathic listening by the therapist contribute to an improvement in emotional understanding and accessibility.

Coach-therapist Kate Hammer will unpack the theme of authenticity using concepts from existential psychotherapy, positive psychology and coaching psychology.

The three-fold aim is to bring to social workers:

1) A clinically informed vocabulary for understanding authenticity and self-worth as it presents in clients’ lives.

2) Some reflective tools social workers can use to help clients identify where they are acting authentically and the kinds of situations where authenticity is impeded.

3) An introduction to Längle’s concept of inner consent.

Additionally, Kate will share information and answer questions about her experience training in Existential Analysis and Logotherapy. In the existential analytic framework, to be authentic is to act from a place of knowing: I am allowed – here, I am permitted to be me, myself. To sense that one is allowed is to experience self-worth. From an existential analytic perspective, self-worth formation is a lifelong task.
