Certificate in Supervision for the Social Service (Intermediate)

Supervision is a critical tool and its process necessary for enhancing and promoting the professional growth, development and performance of Social Workers and other professionals working in the social service sector. Effective supervision is also required to ensure that there is accountability from organisations to their clients. This Intermediate Course builds upon the Foundational Course to enhance the skills and knowledge of Social Workers and Allied Professionals in their supervisory role in the social services.  The Intermediate Level will emphasize on the Educative Function of Supervision.

The course, conducted over 5 days (once a week) covers the following topics which are conducted experientially with emphasis on the practice of educative supervision and exploration of key areas of relevance in supervisory practice.

1. Revisiting and Reflecting on the Supervision Journey 
2. Supervision Ethics and Supervising Ethical Issues in Practice
3. Basic and Advanced Models of Supervision with Practice
4. Theory and Practice of Group Supervision
5. Special Supervision Topics (Crisis Supervision, Attachment in Supervision, Case Management Supervision, Challenges in Supervision)
6. Creative Methods of Supervision

Upon completion of the course participants will be able to :

• Reflect on their supervision practice since they started practice or after Foundational Course attendance.
• Be aware and cognizant of supervision ethics in the local context.
• Be aware and be able deal with ethical issues arising in practice and to deal with them in supervision.
• Learn selected basic and advanced models of supervision and be practice them during the training.
• Learn about group supervision and practice it during the training.
• Learn about special topics in supervision like crisis and case management supervision.
• Learn about creative methods of doing supervision across various areas of practice.

Social Workers and Social Service Practitioners who have attended the Basic Course and have been practising supervisors. Social Workers with more than 5 years of supervision experience are also eligible for the course.

Mr Benny Bong, has a Masters in Social Work from McGill University, Canada. He is a trained Family and Marital Therapist and is in private practice. He has over 25 years of experience in counselling individuals, couples and families. Benny lectures at the NUS, NIE and SUSS and also conducts workshops at SSI on how to manage family violence cases etc. 

Mr Udhia Kumar, has a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours in Social Work), Diploma in Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Diploma in Clinical Supervision. He has been practising as a social worker for over 15 years helping families with marital issues and interpersonal conflicts. He also has a vast experience in supervision. 

Ms Kek Seow Ling, has obtained a Master in Social Science (Community Service Management) from the University of Wales. She is also trained in restorative practices by the International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP). With 15 years of social work experience in health, government and community settings. In her 15 years of social work practice, she is involved in case management, clinical supervision and management.
